Braised beef with star anise
Ingredients
1kg diced stewing steak 1kg diced stewing steak 3 tbsp olive oil Salt and black pepper 1 small tin of chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 1/3 cup soy sauce 4 whole star anise 1 piece of fresh garlic, thumb size, thinly sliced 1 head of garlic, each clove peeled, halved and bottom removed Rind of 1/2 orange 1 teaspoon of dried chillies |
Serves 6 Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Season the beef with salt and pepper then brown quickly using olive oil in a heavy bottom pan. Only cover the bottom of the pan in a single layer, you may need to do this in several batches. Transfer the beef into the casserole dish and in a separate bowl combine the other ingredients. Pour the liquid over the beef and cover. Cook for 2 hours then turn off the heat, reheat for 40 minutes before you are ready to eat.
